NEW YORK — Fire officials say one person has died and up to four others have been injured in a fire that roared through an apartment building in Brooklyn.
The fire broke out in the six-story building on Kingston Avenue in Crown Heights shortly after 10 p.m. Thursday. The cause wasn’t immediately known.
The New York Police Department says after firefighters extinguished the blaze, officers found a man unconscious and suffering from burns in one of the apartments.
Police say he was pronounced dead at the scene. The NYPD identified the man Friday morning as 56-year-old Rupert Smith.
Officials say the injured people have been taken to a local hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.
Dozens of firefighters battled the blaze.
