LONG BEACH, Calif. — Authorities say a man suspected of stabbing a woman was shot and wounded by police in Southern California.

Officials say officers responded late Sunday to a neighborhood in Long Beach, where a woman told them she had been stabbed and another woman was being held against her will.

The officers spotted the male suspect through an open door holding a sharp object to a woman’s neck.

Sgt. Brad Johnson says police opened fire after SWAT officers negotiated with the suspect for about 30 minutes. He did not provide additional details about the shooting.

The suspect was hospitalized in critical condition early Monday. His name was not released.

The stabbed woman was treated at a hospital for non-life-threatening wounds.
