PORT ORCHARD, Wash. — A 23-year-old man who fatally shot another man and left his body on a remote road in Kitsap County has been sentenced to 18 years in prison.

The Kitsap Sun reports (http://bit.ly/2vrE5cS) that 23-year-old Andrew Phillip Gilbert received the sentence Thursday in Kitsap County Superior Court.

Gilbert pleaded guilty to second-degree murder in May for the February death of 30-year-old Hector Apodaca.

Investigators say Gilbert told them he shot Apodaca, believing he was going to steal his BMW.

Authorities say Gilbert and Apodaca had been consuming methamphetamine and heroin together during the day of the shooting.

Gilbert apologized in court to Apodaca’s family and his own for the shooting.
