MOBILE, Ala. — An Alabama park will cease greyhound races by the end of the month, requiring new homes for nearly 400 dogs.
WALA-TV reports Wind Creek Hospitality announced Monday that Mobile Greyhound Park will stop live greyhound racing at the end of the month in response to declining market demand.
Alabama Sighthound Adoptions President Darla Dean told the station that organizations across North America have already agreed to take on dogs. Most will go to homes, but some in top racing shape will move to other tracks.
Dean says greyhounds make good companions, but will have to adjust from the lifestyle of an athlete to that of a pet.
The park will offer simulcast of races. With the closure in Mobile, Birmingham will become the last Alabama city with live greyhound racing.
