MONTPELIER, Vt. — Older people have been dying on the job at a higher rate than workers overall in Vermont for most of the last decade, though there’s been a significant decrease.

An Associated Press analysis of federal statistics found that while the rate of workplace fatalities has decreased nationally, older people are dying on the job at a higher rate than workers overall.

In Vermont, the overall rate of workplace fatalities has fluctuated in the last 10 years and has at times exceeded the national rate. The death rate among older workers also exceeded the national rate in four out of 10 years.

But in 2015, Vermont had one of the lowest death rates in the country for older workers. That year, workers age 55 and over made up 28 percent of Vermont’s workforce.
