Center Grove buying homes

Center Grove is buying two more homes to help prepare for future growth.

School board members approved the purchase of two more homes near Center Grove High School, which officials said could be used for future expansions or other needs.

The homes are both in the same area the school district has purchased at least 11 properties in recent years, according to county records. That area, near Center Grove High School, Center Grove Middle School Central and Center Grove Elementary School, is landlocked, and this property could be used for future expansions, school officials said.

School officials have said the school district could use the land to expand parking or add new buildings to meet needs due to future growth.

One home is located at 2395 Morgantown Road, which is near seven other properties the school district has purchased in recent years along South Morgantown Road.

The other home, at 3005 Hornaday Drive, is in the Pennington Estates neighborhood, located just south of the high school. The school district has purchased at least four properties in that neighborhood in recent years.

School officials have said that neighborhood is positioned in a spot that could be ideal for future expansions. They have been watching for properties to go up for sale there for years.

Both homes would need to have two appraisals, and whatever price the school district pays cannot exceed the average of those two values, under state law.

School officials have no immediate plans for the properties. In the past, some of the homes purchased have been torn down by the school district.
