JEFFERSON, N.J. — Authorities say a New Jersey man who jumped from a pontoon boat into a lake to retrieve his hat has drowned.

Police say roughly 10 relatives were riding Saturday with Bo Long on Lake Hopatcong when his hat blew off. They say the 51-year-old Livingston man turned the boat around, shut off the engine and jumped in the water.

Long retrieved the hat, but the boat began drifting away and he soon had difficult swimming.

Two passengers jumped into the lake after Long slipped below the surface, but they couldn’t reach him. Long wasn’t wearing a life jacket.

In New Hampshire last month, authorities say a 12-year-old Colorado girl was killed when a powerboat operated by her father ran over her when his hat blew off his head, distracting him.
