Hoping to be a big hit: Isabella Reed

The newest addition to an otherwise veteran Greenwood Christian Academy volleyball squad is a freshman hitter.

Isabella Reed, who goes by Izzy, is joining senior twins Lexi and Aubrey Odgers, who start as the Cougars’ setter and libero, respectively. Seniors Sierra Gilson, Grace Peters and Sarah Mangan, the team’s leaders in kills in 2016, are the other top returnees.

Reed is used to being the oldest as the first of Craig and Olivia Reed’s five children, but said she doesn’t feel pressured as the youngest contributor to what could be one of the best volleyball teams in Class A this fall.

“I’m just happy to be in high school and want to help the team out however I can,” Reed said. “We’ve been practicing all summer, and all the girls have been awesome.

“They just look at me as another teammate and that age is no factor.”

The Cougars are coming off a 24-11 record after advancing to the Class A regional at Hauser.

“We have five returning seniors, and Izzy is going to fill in for the player we graduated,” said GCA coach Kayla Back, referring to former Cougars’ right-side hitter Katie Cruse. “Izzy is a really good freshman. She’s coachable and just has a great arm swing.

“We’re excited to see what she can do in our opener against Greenwood.”
