MESA, Ariz. — Mesa police say they are taking over the investigation into the death of an infant left for about two hours in a hot car.

Phoenix firefighters were called about 3 p.m. Saturday about a 1-year-old boy found in a car in the parking lot of the Free Church of God in Christ.

The boy was pronounced dead the scene and was later identified as Jasiah Riggins.

Mesa police say the boy’s father had dropped off his wife and his other child at the church and he and Jasiah returned home to Mesa for a nap.

A few hours later, Jasiah’s father received a call to pick up the family at the church.

As was arriving, police say the dad noticed Jasiah had been left in the vehicle and was unresponsive.
