Martha Jean Hinkle

Martha Jean (Utterback) Hinkle 78, lifelong resident of Bargersville, passed away Saturday, July 22, 2017 at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.

She was born December 27, 1938 in Indianapolis to Maurice Ruel “Wes” Utterback and Mary Aletha (Wheeler) Utterback.

She married Charles Michael “Mike” Hinkle on June 19, 1960 at Providence Christian Church; he preceded her in death on May 10, 1966.

She was a 1957 graduate of Union High School, and received her bachelor’s degree from Franklin College in 1962 and master’s degree from Indiana University in Bloomington in 1972 in education.

Martha taught for the Franklin Community School Corporation for nearly 40 years, spending most of that time teaching at Union Elementary School.

She was an active member of Tabernacle Christian Church in Franklin and previously Providence Christian Church.

She was involved in many activities including the Retired Teachers Association, Child Study and Johnson County Republican Women. She served as a Boy Scout den mother. She was involved in the Indiana University Alumni Association. She attended the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra’s concerts for many years. She was involved in Franklin Community High School Band Boosters, Psi Iota Xi, and was a huge IU Fan and basketball fan.

She enjoyed volunteering at the food pantry and Franklin Study Connection.

Survivors include her son, Charles Eric Hinkle (Pam) of Indianapolis, a daughter Erin Maureen Hinkle Records (Dave) of Greenwood; three granddaughters, Ruth Eleanor Hinkle (John Fox Mast) of Forest Park, Illinois, Aletha Rose Hinkle of Indianapolis and Maura Jane Records of Greenwood; and a sister, Gayle Wheeler (Utterback) Allard of Bargersville.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, and twin sister, Mary Jane Utterback.

The Revs. Evie Stuard and John Williams will conduct a service on Saturday at 11 a.m. at Tabernacle Christian Church, 198 N. Water St., Franklin. Friends may call Friday 4-8 p.m. at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin and Saturday from 10 a.m. until the service time at the church. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
