Man released from rehab, goes to jail

A man charged in a shooting incident with his neighbor has been released from a rehabilitational center and taken to jail.

Jeffrey S. Weigle, 59, Greenwood, was arrested on a charge of criminal recklessness and taken to the Johnson County jail after he was released from a facility where he has been recovering after the shooting last month.

Weigle was charged last week and jail officers were sent to guard him at the facility after he had threatened to return home and kill his neighbor, Dean Keller, who shot him in what the prosecutor had ruled as self defense. The shooting happened on June 27 between the residents of two homes on Campbell Road, east of Greenwood, where police have been called multiple times for disputes.

The prosecutor decided not to charge Keller, 49, in the shooting and said he had acted in self defense. Weigle, who police said pulled his gun out first, was charged in the shooting. Weigle and Keller both fired at each other. Weigle was struck in the chest four times. Keller was not struck.

Weigle is being held on $19,000 bond for the felony charge. The sheriff’s office was also investigating the threat Weigle made against Keller.
