3 killed in accident: Toddler also hospitalized in 5-car pileup

Three Greenwood residents were killed when a bus struck a minivan in a serious crash near Bloomington during the weekend.

The crash Saturday afternoon killed 54-year-old Rose Pettus, 30-year-old Shante Lewis and 29-year-old Orlando Lewis Jr., all of Greenwood, according to the Monroe County Coroner’s office.

A toddler riding in the minivan was taken to an area hospital and was in good condition. A driver of one of the four other vehicles involved in the crash suffered head injuries, Monroe County Sheriff Brad Swain said.

The crash happened just before 2 p.m. near a construction zone on the State Road 37 Business Route, north of Bloomington, when a Miller Transportation bus struck the minivan from behind, Swain said.

Police said the van was stopped when it was struck. Three other vehicles were struck in the crash.

The three people killed died at the scene, police said.

Miller Transportation issued a statement saying it was “greatly saddened for the loss of life” and offering “heartfelt condolences and prayers to the families and all those impacted by the accident.”

The crash is under investigation.

Indiana State Police and the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office accident reconstructionists are investigating the crash.

Autopsies is scheduled for today and Tuesday in Terre Haute.
