Gerald D. Bowers, 70, of Franklin, passed away Monday, July 17, 2017, at his residence.

He was born Aug. 24, 1946 in Indianapolis, to Lester Franklin Bowers and Margaret Christine (Keen) Bowers.

He was a graduate of Emmerich Manual High School in Indianapolis.

He was a U.S Marine Corps veteran of the Vietnam War.

He enjoyed fishing, telling stories and spending time with his grandchildren.

He had been a life insurance agent for Western Southern Life Insurance Co., was a professional softball umpire, and a courier for NOW Courier Service.

Survivors include his daughters, Traci Jo Dearth (Michael) of Franklin and Tonya L. Bowers (Steve Browning) of Franklin; 11 grandchildren, Katelyn, Mackenzie, Madyson and Ashland Dearth, Joshua Weaver, Paige, Austin, Dallas, and Jerica Lawson, Chad and Anthony Sanders; five great-grandchildren, Maverick, Camden, Kynlee and Easten Sanders and Madilynn Zook; two sisters, Nancy Ball of Centralia, Illinois and Diane Meade of Greenwood.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a daughter, Tammy Hall Sanders on May 8, 1996; a grandson, Christopher Ryan Chance on April 5, 2012; and an infant brother.

Pastor Guy Langston will conduct a service at 2 p.m. on Saturday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 S. U.S. 31 (Morton Street) in Franklin. Friends may call from noon until the service time on Saturday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Second Mount Pleasant Cemetery in Franklin with full military honors.
