Franklin brewery gets expansion grant

A Franklin brewery is planning to expand and make room to serve food.

Shale Creek, located on Jefferson Street, got a $12,950 grant from the Franklin Redevelopment Commission that will help pay for the project.

The plan is to expand west of the current space, adding a 400-square-foot kitchen area, owner Mike Baker said.

The space would allow the brewery to serve food, such as sandwiches and salads, he said.

Since the brewery opened last year, they had planned to add a kitchen, he said.

The plans now also include adding more brewing equipment as well to be able to produce more beer, Baker said.

Kitchen and brewing equipment is expected to cost about $67,000, according to plans filed with the city.

Members of the redevelopment commission unanimously approved the grant, which would be administered by the Franklin Development Corp. Shale Creek would not be required to repay the money as long as work was done within 24 months, according to the agreement.
