Girl seriously injured in firework accident

A 14-year-old girl was injured in Franklin after a firework exploded between her legs.

Police were called just before 10 p.m. Saturday to a home in the 2000 block of S. County Road 425W.

Witnesses told police that a firework shot into the sky, came down and landed between the girl’s legs and then went off, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.

The girl had major trauma to her thigh, including burns and shrapnel. She was treated at Riley Hospital for Children at IU Health, according to the report.

The homeowners had taken proper precautions with firework safety and the incident appeared to be a freak accident, the report said.
