Arthur Lewis Studebaker

INDIANAPOLIS

Arthur Lewis Studebaker, age 88 of Dune Acres and Indianapolis, passed away on June 21, 2017, in Indianapolis.

He was born on May 17, 1929, at the family home in Dune Acres to Alden Koch and Naomi Victoria Chellberg Studebaker, both of whom preceded him in death.

On Aug. 17, 1957, in West Lafayette, he married Janet Ellis Newman, who preceded him in death on Jan. 17, 2000.

Arthur is survived by his daughters, Heidi Studebaker of Dune Acres and Indianapolis and Lisa (Luis) Studebaker-Alayza of New Palestine; his six grandchildren, Marissa Sullivan, Cara Sullivan, Kris Studebaker, Lauren Alayza, Luis Erquiaga and Ricardo Alayza; his great-grandchildren, Kyan Studebaker, Tyler Studebaker, Ayden Alayza and Liam Alayza.

He is also preceded in death by his daughter, Gayle Lyn Studebaker on Aug. 26, 1985, and his brother, Alden Henry Studebaker on Dec. 5, 2014.

Arthur graduated from Chesterton High School in Chesterton in 1947 and served his country in the United States Army from 1951 to 1952. He earned a BS in industrial distribution in 1959 from Purdue University, and then earned a MS in industrial distribution in 1963, also from Purdue University. He was a math and science teacher as well as director of productions at Shortridge High School in Indianapolis from 1959 to 1985.

Arthur was also the co-owner, along with his wife Janet, of Studebaker Properties from 1970-2001. He was also a member of the Studebaker Driver’s Club and a life member of the Purdue Alumni Association. He was a volunteer at the Indiana Dunes National Lakeshore Chellberg Farm for the St. Lucia and Midsummer Swedish Programs.

A Memorial Service will be at 1 p.m. Sunday at the Dune Acres Clubhouse, 1 Clubhouse Drive, Dune Acres. The family will receive friends from noon until time of service at the Dune Acres Clubhouse.

Memorial donations may be given to the Shelby County 4H Lama and Angora Goat Projects, 1600 East State Road 44, Suite C, Shelbyville, IN 46176.
