5 things to know: Story time in the park

Families can gather in a park for activities and stories at an upcoming event.

Johnson County Public Library is hosting Story Time in the Park in July and August.

Whitney Woody, children’s programmer, tells you what you need to know.

11 a.m. to noon July 8, Proctor Park, 499 Tracy Road, Whiteland

11 a.m. to noon Aug. 12 at Country Gate Park, New Whiteland.

TWO

How much does it cost?

It’s free!

THREE

What book are you reading?

Each story time features interactive stories, craft and activity.

July: Since Proctor Park honors our heroes, this will be a hero-themed story time with an obstacle course.

August: We will be at Country Gate with a picnic theme. Families are welcome to bring a blanket and snacks to enjoy while listening to a few stories. Afterwards, there will be a scavenger hunt.

FOUR

How did you get the idea?

I worked for a library system in West Virginia and our youth services team wanted a unique way to provide outreach for families during the summer, so we decided to connect with the local park system and Story Time in the Park was created. Since working for the Johnson County Public Library system, I have learned that the Whiteland area is a big supporter of family-themed events, so I wanted to introduce this program to the community.

FIVE

What do you want people to get from the event?

Not only is this a free and fun program for families, but an avenue to promote the various programs and resources the library has to offer. It is a great way to encourage reading throughout the summer.
