County park: A sparkle in the night

Sparks in the Park continues the Johnson County Park’s tradition of fireworks and music in its spacious amphitheater leading into the Fourth of July holiday.

Formerly, the park had featured a classical music performance from an area orchestra during a concert called Fanfare & Fireworks. Last year, the park tweaked the formula to focus on modern music.

The headliner this time around is Mr. Zero, which blends classic rock with more modern hits into an energy-charged set. The band plays everything from “You Shook Me All Night Long” by AC/DC and “Livin’ On a Prayer” by Bon Jovi to “Seven Nation Army” by the White Stripes.

Serving as a warm-up will be Hoot Von Woot, an eclectic band performing a mash-up of folk, rock, bluegrass and whatever else catches their ear.

Mallow Run Winery and Taxman Brewing Co. will be on site serving refreshments, while Traveling Taste Buds and SON’s Kettlecorn will have food available to purchase.

Tickets to the concert are $5, with kids 12 and under in free. The Indiana Live Steamers will be offering train rides for $3.

The fireworks show, which starts at dusk, is free and open to the public.
