NEW YORK — An 88-year-old woman is dead and a man is in critical condition following a blaze that tore through their New York City apartment.

City fire officials say firefighters responded to the blaze after 7 p.m. Monday in Manhattan’s Morningside Heights section. Firefighters found an 88-year-old woman and an 86-year-old man inside their apartment on the building’s 15th floor. They were removed and taken to a nearby hospital, where the woman was pronounced dead on arrival.

The man is listed in critical condition. Both of the victims’ names weren’t made public.

Authorities say it isn’t clear what sparked the fire, but the investigation is ongoing.
