Lane closures part of State Road 135, U.S. 31 repavement

If you’ve driven on State Road 135 recently, you’ve likely had a bumpy ride.

But your drive will soon get smoother.

Construction recently started on State Road 135 in the Center Grove area as part of a $6.1 million ongoing project to repave both State Road 135 and U.S. 31 in Johnson County.

Jim England, who often drives on State Road 135 from Southport to Bargersville for work, had seen work being done and noticed the road was bumpier than it had been before construction started. He was hopeful to see the road get better with the project, not worse.

What crews have been doing so far is making repairs to the road surface, before paving is set to begin later this month, according to the Indiana Department of Transportation.

Asphalt patching and concrete repairs will begin today on State Road 135, from County Road 144 to Stones Crossing Road, and continue through next week, according to a news release.

But that will mean that drivers will face some lane closures through next week, and workers will be directing traffic.

Work will be done during daytime hours, department of transportation spokesperson Harry Maginity said. Crews will do asphalt work today and Thursday, and then will be doing concrete work Friday and Saturday, which will require longer closures to have time for the concrete to set up, he said.

That same work already was done further north on State Road 135, between Curry and County Line roads, and on U.S. 31, between County Line and Stop 18 roads, Maginity said.

Once repair work is done, crews will begin paving both roads, Maginity said.

Paving work will start on U.S. 31 around June 19, and crews will then move over to State Road 135, he said. Exactly where and when that work will begin hasn’t been decided, he said.
