Woman scammed in car purchase

A Johnson County woman lost several thousand dollars to a vehicle sale scam after she attempted to purchase two vehicles online using gift cards.

The woman attempted to purchases two vehicles online for $3,500: a 2009 Nissan Murano sports utility vehicle and a 1998 Chevy pickup truck, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.

The seller of the SUV asked for $2,000 to be paid with Amazon gift cards. The seller of the pickup truck asked for $1,500 to be paid with eBay gift cards. The woman sent the gift card numbers to the sellers by email, the report said.

When the woman was asked to pay an additional shipping charge for the SUV, she requested a refund instead, which she was told would be processed in seven days. She also made a request for a refund from the seller of the pickup truck, the report said.

After not hearing from the sellers, the woman realized she had been scammed and contacted the sheriff’s office, the report said.

This is the second report of this type of scam in the past month. Earlier in May, a Johnson County man paid $3,500 with eBay gift cards to purchase and have delivered a pickup truck and travel trailer. The man never received the truck or trailer.
