Eugene “Gene” Nix

Eugene “Gene” Nix, 94, of Greenwood, passed away Tuesday, May 23, 2017.

He was born to the late Elsie Edna (Ramsey) and John Brady Nix on March 20, 1923, in Gary.

After graduating from Emerson High School in 1941 he joined the U.S. Army and served in the Korean War as an Army counter intelligence officer.

After being discharged in 1956, he began working for State Farm Insurance where he retired in 1987 as a claim superintendent.

Gene was a member of St. John’s United Church of Christ, Greenwood Rotary, American Legion Post 252, VFW and Warrior’s Hope, Inc.

He served 10 years on the Greenwood city planning commission, 18 years on the Greenwood park board and 10 years on Indiana state park board.

Gene was preceded in death by his wife, Viola (Clowdis) Nix; daughter, Melissa Nix; and four siblings.

He is survived by his children, Debra Nix, Bruce (Janice) Nix and MaryAnn (Justin) Northrup; brother, Richard (Bev) Nix; four grandchildren, Jordan Nix, Jared Nix, Erica Croteau and Amber Mansfield; and five great-grandchildren.

Calling will be 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at Wilson St. Pierre Funeral Service & Crematory, Greenwood Chapel, 481 W. Main St. The funeral service will be at noon Saturday at St. John’s United Church of Christ, 7031 S. East St., Indianapolis, IN 46227, with calling from 11 a.m. until the service time. Burial will be in Forest Lawn Memory Gardens Cemetery in Greenwood.
