A Trafalgar woman was scammed out of thousands of dollars after someone posing as her granddaughter claimed she needed the money.
A woman called police Thursday morning to report that she received a call from a woman claiming to be her granddaughter. The caller knew her granddaughter’s name and address and said she needed money because she had been in an accident, according to a report from the Johnson County Sheriff’s Office.
The woman instructed the Trafalgar resident to go to Best Buy and buy $4,000 in gift cards, which the woman did, according to the report.
The caller asked the woman to go and get more gift cards. A relative stopped the woman from going back, the report said.
Best Buy was able to cancel $2,000 of the gift cards that had not been used, according to the report.
