KEENE, N.H. — Keene State College is one of nine colleges and universities across the country being honored for their commitment to environmental stewardship, sustainability and health and wellness in all parts of campus life.

The U.S. Department of Education recently recognized the college as part of its 2017 Green Ribbon Schools project. Officials say over the years, the college’s well intentioned but less than systemic efforts have evolved into a comprehensive vision with strong buy-in from administrators, faculty and students.

The college’s mission statement includes environmental stewardship and sustainability as core values, and the school was recognized for achievements such as replacing heating oil with renewable biofuel made from recycled vegetable oil and emphasizing organic landscaping using compost made from dining hall waste.
