DENVER — A Denver police officer who responded to a report of a suicidal man was shot in the leg by the suspect. Other officers returned fire, critically injuring the man.

Police said officers encountered the armed, suicidal man at about 4:30 a.m. Saturday. They were trying to calm him and take him into custody when he shot an officer.

The man, who has not been identified, underwent surgery and was listed in critical but stable condition at about 9 a.m.

The injured officer also underwent surgery and was hospitalized in stable condition. The officer’s name was not released.
