GILBERT, Ariz. — An assistant chief for the Mesa Police Department will be the new police chief in neighboring Gilbert.

An announcement by Gilbert officials says Michael Soelberg will take over as the city’s new chief on June 5.

Tim Dorn retired as Gilbert’s chief earlier this year.

Soelberg is a Gilbert resident who began his career with Mesa as a patrol officer in 1995. He’s since headed divisions and other units within the Mesa department as he worked his way up through the ranks.
