BLOOMINGTON

Melvin H. Smith, 96, of Bloomington, formerly of Bargersville and Shelby County, passed away on Saturday, May 13, 2017, at Indiana University Health Hospice House in Bloomington.

He was born July 2, 1920, in Owen County, Kentucky to Howard and Rell Martha (Hensley) Smith.

He was the last surviving member of his 1938 graduating class of Straughn High School in Henry County.

He was a member of Beech Grove Baptist Church in Trafalgar. He was active at the Franklin Senior Citizen Center.

He had been a farmer in Johnson and Shelby counties and also retired from Tom O’Brien Chrysler in Indianapolis and Greenwood in 1979 as a parts and service manager after 25 years of service.

Surviving are his children, Beverly Glentzer (Lewis) of Franklin, Sandra Black (Keith) of Bloomington, Barbara Burdine (Mike) of Franklin, Joyce Lowes (Douglas) of Falmouth, Marvin Smith (Karen) of Bloomington and Connie Ament of Livermore, Colorado; nine grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and three great-great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; wife, Marian Anderson Smith; former spouse, Helen (Elkins) Smith in 2012; great-grandchild, Avery Lowes; brother, Porter Smith, and sisters, Sue Patterson and Evelyn Owens.

The Rev. Ron Sodrell will conduct a service at 1:30 p.m. Friday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 U.S. 31 South (Morton Street) in Franklin where friends may call from 11 a.m. until the service time on Friday at the mortuary. Entombment will follow at Forest Lawn Memory Gardens in Greenwood.
