Girl killed in crash when driver swerves to avoid bicycle

An 11-year-old girl died in a car crash after a Greenwood driver swerved to avoid hitting a bicyclist that had fallen in the road.

Kaitlyn Wells of Martinsville was killed in the crash, according to an Indiana State Police news release.

Wells was a passenger in a vehicle being driven by Alexis Davis, 21, of Greenwood. They were going south on State Road 37 just north of Bloomington about 6:30 p.m. Saturday when a bicyclist attempting to cross State Road 37 on Bottom Road fell over in the left lane, the news release said.

Davis swerved to avoid the cyclist, but lost control of her car, which slid sideways through the median into the northbound State Road 37 lanes. Her car was then struck by a truck driven by John Wobser, 50, of Franklin, the release said.

The crash remains under investigation, the release said.
