Martha “Lorene” (McMurray) Stokes

Martha “Lorene” (McMurray) Stokes, 84, of Franklin, passed away Tuesday, May 9, 2017, at Community Hospital South in Indianapolis.

She was born Feb. 2, 1933, in Johnson County to Marvin A. and Pearl Mae (Hardwick) McMurray.

She married Charles E. Stokes on Feb. 27, 1954, he preceded her in death on Aug. 27, 2013.

She had worked for Arvin Automotive in Franklin.

Her true calling was being a wife and mother. She loved and enjoyed spending time with her family.

She enjoyed her Red Hat sisters, music, playing cards with friends at the Franklin Active Adult Center, crafts of all kinds, working puzzles, playing the piano and singing. She especially enjoyed traveling to Branson, Missouri to enjoy the Duttons, Niagara Falls, and the Biltmore estate — which fascinated her.

She was a member of Friendship Baptist Church in Franklin.

Survivors include her five sons, Steve Stokes, Dave Stokes (Robin), Mike Stokes (Maria), Rob Stokes (Michele) and Tony Stokes; 10 grandchildren, Michael Stokes, Brian Stokes, Heather Combs (Scott), Traci Rooks (Raymond), David Stokes, Nick Stokes, Tom Stokes, Jakob Schulte, Gyllian Stokes and Carson Stokes; nine great-grandchildren, Andrea, Kyle, Ellie, Zachary, Ava, Adrian, Liam, Bryson and Kyler; a brother Gerald McMurray, a sister, Kathleen Sneed Dean (Cliff); sister-in-law Delores McMurray Barnes, and a brother-in-law, Gene Biggerstaff.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband; a brother, Harold McMurray, a sister, Wilma Jean Biggerstaff; infant sister, Patty Ann McMurray; and brother-in-law, Edward Sneed.

The Rev. Fred Brown will conduct a service at 11 a.m. on Friday at Swartz Family Community Mortuary and Memorial Center, 300 U.S. 31 South (Morton Street) in Franklin. Friends may call from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the mortuary. Burial will be at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
