Sinkhole repair work closes road

A county road south of Trafalgar is closed through Friday after a sinkhole appeared due to a deteriorating culvert.

West County Road 750 South between Peoga Road and County Road 250 West will be closed through Friday for temporary repairs that beganĀ  Tuesday, according to a Johnson County Highway Department news release.

While the deterioration of the pipe could have been impacted by the heavy rain the past few weeks, Johnson County engineer Neil VanTrees said that likely was not the primary cause.

The pipe deterioration and resulting sinkhole is a rare event on county roads, he said.

The road will need to be closed for a second time later this summer for the replacement of the 10-foot diameter pipe.
