Grocery location set for opening

Customers will get their first look inside the new Franklin Meijer when doors open at 7 a.m. Tuesday.

The 192,000- square-foot grocery store and super center on the west side of U.S. 31 near Commerce Drive will be the second Meijer store in Johnson County, with the other at State Road 135 and Main Street in Greenwood.

Meijer will have a Starbucks and Great Clips salon inside. The store also will have a full-service pharmacy and fresh produce delivered daily, a news release said.

A Meijer gas station near the store opened last month.

The store, which will have about 300 employees, is the second major grocery store to open in Franklin in the past year.

A Kroger Marketplace opened nearby on U.S. 31 in September, bringing along with it a shopping center with six shops including Petsmart, Shoe Show, Marshalls and Ross Dress for Less.

Meijer is also sparking other nearby development. Two restaurants will be opening in lots in front of Meijer later in 2017.

Freddy’s Frozen Custard & Steakburgers and Buffalo Wild Wings have had site plans approved by Franklin. Both are ready for construction and waiting to receive building permits.

Across the street, on the north side of Commerce Drive, a GetGo gas station is also planned.
