Banker set to retire

A longtime local banker and community volunteer is retiring at the end of the month.

Steve Bechman, Johnson County market president for Horizon Bank, has announced his retirement effective April 28.

Bechman’s first job as a banker was for Bargersville State Bank in 1975. Throughout his first two decades in the industry, he worked his way through the ranks, holding positions in collections, commercial lending and eventually market president.

In 1997, he and a few colleagues launched Heartland Community Bank. In 2012, he and a business partner sold the bank to Horizon.

He has served as board member and president for both the Franklin Chamber of Commerce and the United Way of Johnson County and was also on the Johnson Memorial Health Foundation board for 16 years. He’s currently serving on the board of the Franklin United Methodist Community, and has also served on the board for the Indiana 4-H Foundation.
