Shots fired at Circle K clerk; 2 flee gas station after morning robbery

Two armed men robbed a Whiteland gas station early Wednesday morning, shooting at the clerk as they left the scene.

The Whiteland Police Department received a 911 call of an armed robbery at Circle K Marathon gas station in the 900 block of U.S. 31 about 2:45 a.m. Wednesday, Whiteland Police Chief Rick Shipp said.

The men pointed a handgun at the clerk and demanded money. They took an undisclosed amount of cash and left before officers arrived, he said.

The suspects exited through the front door of the building, and the clerk left through the back door. When they crossed paths outside, the suspects fired multiple shots at the clerk, but the clerk wasn’t struck by any of the bullets, Shipp said.

The robbery remains under investigation. Officers are reviewing surveillance footage from the gas station and surrounding businesses, Shipp said.

The suspects were driving a black, older model Ford Expedition sports utility vehicle with tinted windows, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.

The Franklin Police Department, New Whiteland Police Department and Johnson County Sheriff’s Office also responded to the robbery, Shipp said.
