Moving on: Grizzly Cubs, Braves advance to tennis semis

Franklin’s girls tennis team faces a bumpy road through the Johnson County tournament, but it has survived the first leg of the journey.

The Grizzly Cubs defeated Greenwood 4-1 on Wednesday and advance to face top-seeded Center Grove in a semifinal match at Whiteland on Saturday morning.

In Wednesday’s other first-round match, Indian Creek coasted to a 5-0 victory against Edinburgh. The Braves will face the host Warriors in the semis.

Franklin claimed all three singles matches against the Woodmen. Lexi Wilkenson was a three-set winner against Maddie Bright at No. 1 singles, and Kate Heuchan and Abi Smith won their matches at No. 2 and No. 3 in straight sets.

The Grizzly Cubs also earned a point at No. 2 doubles with a win by the duo of Aiden Smith and Ella Pheifer. Greenwood’s lone point came from its No. 1 doubles team of Molly Jacobs and Alyssa Roscoe.

Indian Creek got straight-set singles victories from Kaite Burkman, Ali Harris and Brooke Coy to secure the win against the Lancers. At No. 1 doubles, Sara Knight and McKayla Russell picked up a victory, while Mya Piccone and Mekenzie Hunter took care of business at No. 2.
