Zike named Braves’ A.D. in interim

Former Whiteland Community High School athletics director Butch Zike went back to school Thursday.

Only this time, it was at Indian Creek.

Zike, who retired from Whiteland after the 2011-12 school year and currently serves as softball coach at Franklin College, will be interim athletics director for the Braves through the remainder of the school year.

He fills a void left when Justin Ray became supervisor of grounds, custodians and facilities at Whiteland Community High School.

“(Thursday) I just really signed paperwork and stuff like that,” said Zike, who was Whiteland’s athletics director from 1975-79 and again from 1988-2012. “I won’t be supervising any athletic events.

“I’m putting in about four hours a day, but once my softball season is over that will go up to six hours.”

A five-year administrative hiatus might not sound like much, though Zike would argue that point.

“It’s a hard routine to get back into because there are so many new things to deal with,” he said. “But Indian Creek has some really great people to work with.”
