Southport defeats Warriors

Whiteland came up short against visiting Southport on Wednesday, losing to the Cardinals 3-2.

Producing points for the Warriors were Avneet Badwal at No. 2 singles and No. 3 singles player Haley Darling.

Softball team splits with Transylvania

The Grizzlies split a doubleheader against visiting Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Transylvania.

Behind a no-hitter by junior pitcher Olivia Paszek, the Grizzlies won the first game 2-0. Transylvania edged Franklin in the second game 1-0.

In Game 1, Paszek gave up no hits or walks and struck out one batter in seven flawless innings. The Grizzlies scored two runs in the bottom of the third inning for all the runs they would need in support of Paszek, who now has two career no-hitters.

First baseman Savannah Blevins scored a run and had Franklin’s only RBI in the first game. Third baseman Jessica Thom, who was 1 for 2 at the plate, scored the Grizzlies’ other run.

Men’s tennis defeats Anderson

Men’s tennis team earned a 6-3 win at Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference opponent Anderson University.

With the win, the Grizzlies improved to 4-4 overall and 3-1 in the HCAC.

Franklin’s singles winners were Alex Hammer at No. 1 (6-3, 6-2); Blake Amonett at No. 2 (6-1, 6-1); Ethan Caldwell at No. 3 (6-3, 7-5); and Kyle Sauley at No. 4 (6-0, 6-3).

In doubles, Hammer and Caldwell won at No. 1 (8-3), and Dean Elrod and Dan Hicks won at No. 3 (9-8, 7-5).
