Monrovia sweeps GCA

Greenwood Christian Academy was defeated twice by Monrovia in a doubleheader on Saturday. Monrovia routed the Cougars, ending the games with final scores of 16-0 and 14-4.

Center Grove places second, Franklin fifth

Center Grove and Franklin competed in the Hall of Fame Classic at Rock Hollow on Saturday.

The Trojans finished in second place with 290, while the Grizzly Cubs took fifth with 319. Carmel won the tournament with a final score of 289.

Girls tennis

Cubs defeat Woodmen, Decatur Central

Franklin took down Greenwood, 4-1, and Decatur Central, 5-0, on Saturday. Greenwood also went on to defeat Decatur Central, 4-1.

Warriors fall to Plainfield, Mooresville

Whiteland was defeated by Plainfield, 3-2, and Mooresville, 4-1, in their season openers on Saturday.

Reese Johnson and Avneet Badwal took home victories in single competition.

Track and field

Witte breaks two school records

Greenwood Christian Academy participated in the Owl Invitational at Muncie Burris on Saturday.

Among the boys, Dan Witte led the way, breaking school records in shot put with a throw of 25 feet, 8 inches, and in discus with a throw of 72-9.

Anna Simons stood out for the girls, placing fourth in the 400 (1:07) and fifth in the 800 (2:58).

Baseball squad splits with Defiance

Franklin College played Defiance in a double-header on Saturday. The first game ended in a rout by Defiance, 27-10. The Grizzlies rallied to earn a split by winning the nightcap, 12-4.

Frank Podkul, Sam Claycamp and Nick Wright all contributed home runs. Jacob McMain was the winning pitcher for Franklin. The Grizzlies improve to 15-8 (7-3 HCAC).

Softball enjoys solid weekend

The Grizzlies won three of their four games this weekend.

The first pair of wins came against Manchester at home on Saturday. They won on scores of 10-1 and 8-3.

Savannah Blevins led the way with one home run and two doubles in the series. Alexis Tarver also scored a home run.

The Grizzlies then went on to battle Indiana-Southeast on Sunday, winning the first one, 11-2, and losing the second, 11-9. Blevins had two homers in the series. Lauren Heubler finished with one home run.

Men’s tennis routs Transylvania

Franklin College took down Transylvania, 8-1, on Saturday. The Grizzlies won by sweeping all six single matches and winning two doubles.

The victorious singles players were Alex Hammer, Blake Amonett, Kyle Sauley, Dean Elrod, Dan Hicks and Josh Stewart. The doubles wins included Ethan Caldwell and Hammer, along with Amonett and Stauley.

Track squads fare well

Franklin College competed in an invitational at home on Saturday.

The teams competing against the Grizzlies included Thomas More, Mount St. Joseph and Earlham. The women took first with 87 points, while the men finished second overall.

Kelsey Bowling led the women with victories in the 100 hurdles long jump and triple jump (10.33). Erica Christy also had a successful day, bringing in first place finishes in the shot put, as well as the hammer throw.

Other individual winners were Rachel Bowden in the 3,000 steeplechase and Laura Worthington in the discus.

For the men, winners included Reed Sauter in the 400, Clayton Brumfield in the 1,500 run, Matt Stienke in the 110 hurdles, Tyler Doty in the high jump, Nathan Adams in the hammer throw and Nich Uhl in the javelin.
