Chuck Horsman exhibit on display

The Southside Art League Inc. is hosting an exhibit of the impressionistic oil paintings of Greenwood painter Chuck Horsman next month.

Southsider Chuck Horsman graduated from Roncalli High School and the University of Indianapolis in 1988 with a Bachelor of Science in fine arts. He now works as a graphic designer for his own company, Chuck Horsman Design, which he began in 2002.

While creating logos, letterheads, brochure and digital designs from his Greenwood studio to pay the bills, he rediscovered his passion for painting about three years ago. His goal now is to paint every day to improve his craft, according to a recent statement.

He won the 2016 Art Uncorked Mallow Run Winery label competition. His landscapes and portrait paintings are displayed at the Stutz Building in Indianapolis, Pro Art Gallery in Greenwood, and his website, chuckhorsmanart.com.

His paintings will hang April 1 to the 27 at the SALI Off Broadway Gallery, 299 E. Broadway St., Greenwood.

His style for painting portraits starts with a sketch and color blocks. Next he brushes in more color and detail. Then he uses his palette knife to loosen up and abstract the image. The final step is to add some words or symbols that depict something important about the subject’s life. The result is a natural and lively interpretation rather than a photographic reproduction.

Regular gallery hours are 11 a.m. to 3 p.m Wednesday through Saturday and by appointment. Call SALI at 317-882-5562 to arrange a viewing by appointment at any other time. The exhibit is free.

The public is invited to meet Chuck Horsman during the SALI open house from 6 to 8 p.m. April 14. Light refreshments will be served.
