Man injured by shrapnel to neck during target practice

A man was wounded from ricocheting shrapnel while he was target shooting Thursday.

Johnson County Sheriff’s Office deputies investigated a report of a gunshot wound at Community Hospital South. The victim had a small wound on the front of his neck, the sheriff’s office report said.

He told police was target shooting alone on property west of State Road 37 when he was hit by shrapnel in the neck. He’d been shooting at steel targets about 10 yards away when the accident happened, the report said.

He had to go to Indiana University Health Methodist Hospital to have the material removed because it was lodged so near to his windpipe, the report said.
