Margaret J. Atkins

Margaret J. Atkins, 91, of Fishers, passed away on Monday, March 20, 2017.

She was born May 2, 1925, in Indianapolis, to the late Edward and Beulah Mercy Liehr.

Margaret was graduated from Howe High School and received her bachelor’s and master’s degrees in education from Butler University.

She retired in 1990 after over 40 years as a teacher in the Indianapolis Public School System (at schools 29 and 22).

Margaret was a former member of the Irvington Presbyterian Church, Kappa Kappa Gamma sorority at Butler and the Indiana State Teachers Association.

In her youth she was an avid swimmer and throughout her lifetime she enjoyed traveling all over the world.

Margaret is survived by her daughter, Sarah M. Atkins; stepsons, Clayton H. (Carole) and Steven D. (Aida) Atkins; 10 step-grandchildren; many step-great-grandchildren; nieces, Deborah (Jack) Morrissey and Deanna (Richard) VanBussum, nephew, John D. VanKirk.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Amos H. Atkins in 2012; and by her sister, Patricia VanKirk.

Visitation will be 10 a.m. until the time of service at noon on Thursday at Shirley Brothers Washington Memorial Chapel, 9606 E. Washington St., Indianapolis. Services will be conducted by the Rev. Maureen Wilson.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Irvington Presbyterian Church, 55 Johnson Avenue, Indianapolis, IN 46219.
