Pedestrian killed in accident on U.S. 31

A woman stepped out into traffic late Friday night in Greenwood and was hit by a vehicle and killed, police said.

The public is being asked to help the Johnson County Coroner’s Office locate her family.

Theresa Jean Shaffer, 53, Indianapolis, was killed in the accident at U.S. 31 and Main Street about 10 p.m. Friday, Greenwood police said in a news release.

Witnesses told police that she was wearing all dark clothing and walked eastbound across U.S. 31 directly into traffic, and was hit by a northbound vehicle, which was traveling through the intersection on a green light, police said.

Accident investigators interviewed the vehicle’s driver and passenger, and tested the driver for alcohol use or any impairment, which is standard in a serious-injury or fatal accident. The driver tested negative.

Shaffer’s identity wasn’t immediately known, but the coroner’s office was able to determine her identity on Saturday. None of her family has been located. The public is asked to notify the Johnson County Coroner’s Office at 317-534-8344 if you can help locate her family.
