Mary F. Pogue

FRANKLIN

Mary F. Pogue, 97, passed away Friday morning, March 17, 2017, at Morning Pointe of Franklin. She was a resident of Franklin.

She was born Feb. 23, 1920, in Columbus, to Henry Shireman, Jr. and Florence (Lawlis) Shireman.

She married Leonard M. Pogue on May 2, 1942. He preceded her in passing in 1981.

Mary is survived by her children, Leonard “Sonny” (Debbie) Pogue Jr. and Pamela Sue (Steve) Whiteside, both of Columbus, and Nancy (Bob) Smith of Franklin. Also surviving are grandchildren, Missy (Eric) Borkhardt, Ben (Jenny) Whiteside and Jennifer Williams; great-grandchildren, Julian Greenwell, Blake Borkhardt, Allana Whiteside, Eliza Whiteside, Lydia Whiteside and Audrey Whiteside; and one brother, Ray Shireman of Hartsville.

She was preceded in passing by her parents; husband, Leonard; brother, Paul Shireman; and sister, Elsie VanCamp.

Mary was a 1938 graduate of Columbus High School.

She was employed by Jesters in Franklin and later was the cafeteria manager at Webb Elementary for several years. She later worked for L.S. Ayres & Co. for 32½ years, retiring in March 2006.

She attended Tabernacle Christian Church in Franklin. She was a member of Kappa Kappa Sigma sorority and Franklin chapter, Order of Eastern Star No. 439.

Mary enjoyed knitting. Her passion was making blankets for the local hospitals. In later years, she loved playing bingo.

The Rev. Evie Stuard will conduct a celebration of Mary’s life at 1 p.m. on Monday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin. Friends may call from 11 a.m. until the time of service on Monday at the funeral home. Burial will follow at Greenlawn Cemetery in Franklin.
