Dorothy Jean (Bailey) Burnell

Dorothy Jean (Bailey) Burnell, 89, of Whiteland, passed away on Sunday, March 5, 2017, at home at the Morning Pointe Senior Living Facility, in Franklin.

She was born on Feb. 28, 1928, in Indianapolis, to her parents, William and Helen (Barge) Bailey.

She was member of the Stinger Club (a club for the crew and their families of the U.S.S. Wasp CV-7), the Greenwood Moose Lodge No. 2079/WOTM Chapter No. 1553, and the Beech Grove Eagles Club No. 4167.

Dorothy was one of the four founders of the original Johnson County Humane Society, in the 1970s. She had a passion for helping animals.

She enjoyed living at Morning Pointe Senior Facility, in Franklin. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude, to all of the staff, for their loving care of Dorothy.

Dorothy is survived by her children, Ike W.P. (Yon) Burnell of Greenwood, Donna “Babe” Francis of Indianapolis, Sue Shirrel of Mooresville, Mary (Roger) Clarkson of Whiteland and Beth (Steve) Ent of Indianapolis; one sister, Mary Harrell of Indianapolis; 10 grandchildren; and 19 great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Wallace Burnell; parents, William and Helen Bailey; a son, Charlie Burnell; a brother, William Bailey; and one grandson, Ty Sutton.

The Rev. Dan Bradley is conducting a celebration of life service at noon on Thursday at Jessen Funeral Home, Whiteland Chapel, 729 N. U.S. 31. Burial will be at Forest Lawn Memorial Garden Funeral Home, Greenwood.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made, in Dorothy’s memory, to the Johnson County Humane Society, 3827 N. Graham Road, Franklin, IN 46131.
