Mary Ellen Schaffer

Mary Ellen Schaffer, 86, passed away on Saturday, March 4, 2017, at Kindred Hospital in Greenwood. She was a resident of Franklin.

Mary was born on May 11, 1930, in Terre Haute, to William and Hazel (Scott) Mullen.

She married Donald L. Schaffer who preceded her in passing.

She is survived by daughter, Carla Demaree (Doug) of Franklin; son, Nick Virostko (Zelma) of Gore, Oklahoma; grandchildren, Jan Jones (Brett) of Franklin, Libby Findley (Chad) of Bargersville, Nick Virostko, Penny Virostko and Dimo Virostko, all of Gore, Oklahoma; five great-grandchildren, Jake and Natalie Kate Findley, Cameron and Kellan Jones, and Hunter Virostko; and one sister, Nancy Piper of Illinois.

She was preceded in passing by her parents; husband; siblings, Alice Kyle, Betty Walters and Rebecca Jones; daughter, Nancy Jane Schaffer; and son, Donald L. Schaffer, Jr.

She was a graduate of Valley High School in west Terre Haute.

Mary was employed by the Social Security Administration, retiring after almost 30 years of dedicated service. After retirement, she worked for L.S. Ayres & Co. and later at Landtree Realty.

Mary had served on the board at Whispering Ponds for many years.

She enjoyed bowling and was an avid I.U. and Indiana Pacers fan.

She most especially enjoyed and loved spending time with her grandchildren.

A gathering for friends and family will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at Flinn and Maguire Funeral Home, 2898 N. Morton St. (U.S. 31 North) in Franklin.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made in Mary’s memory to Senior Services of Johnson County, 731 S. State Street, Franklin, IN 46131.
