Wessler Engineering wins award for trail design

Wessler Engineering of Indianapolis has earned a national recognition for its work on the Fry Road Trail in Greenwood. The award was given at the American Council of Engineering Companies’ 50th annual Engineering Excellence Awards.

ACEC is the Washington-D.C.-based business association of the engineering industry representing more than 5,000 independent engineering firms throughout the United States.

Wessler Engineering created the Rain Trail for the half-mile route of the buried 36-in diameter sewer line by creating an 8-foot wide multi-use trail topped with porous asphalt. The pavement allows rainwater to seep through the surface into a perforated plastic pipe, which channels runoff into the city’s stormwater management system.

The green engineering solution provides the city with a popular new recreational amenity without the need for expansive new drainage infrastructure. The project also improves safety, as pedestrians no longer have to walk immediately adjacent to a busy Fry Road.

Wessler Engineering provides civil and environmental engineering design services.
