Larry Mitchell

FISHERS

Larry Mitchell, 81, of Fishers, passed away on Sunday, Feb. 26, 2017.

Larry was a lifelong Hoosier and loved Indiana.

He graduated from Arsenal Technical High School in 1952.

He entered the Army in 1958 and served two years at Fort Knox, Kentucky, before he started working for Indiana Bell.

In 1962, he married Bonnie Shearer. The two eventually moved to Greenwood where they raised their three children. He continued to work for Indiana Bell and its subsequent companies for 35 years.

Larry is survived by his wife of 54 years, Bonnie of Fishers. He is also survived by his children and their spouses: Jennifer and Brian Atkinson of Fishers, Luci and Jeff Van Valer of Fishers and Lawrence and Heather Mitchell of Zionsville.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Bruce and Helen Mitchell; his stepmother, Janice Mitchell; and his beloved grandmother, Jennie “Mimi” Belle Bruce Mitchell. His siblings Bruce, Julie, and Martha Ellen also predeceased him.

Larry treasured his eight grandchildren and one grandson-in-law: Taylor (Atkinson) and Amir Abbas, Elizabeth Mitchell, Claire Atkinson, Samantha Mitchell, Grace Atkinson, Meredith Mitchell, Martha Van Valer and Joe Van Valer.

Larry was a lifelong fan of the Pacers, Indy 500 and all levels of Indiana basketball.

Larry enjoyed golfing, camping, and fishing, usually with his family.

Larry was a quiet man who took his responsibilities seriously. The light of his life was his eight grandchildren; their success mattered a great deal to him. With Bonnie, he could be found watching countless tennis matches, show choir performances, band concerts, cross country meets, baseball games, ice skating shows, soccer games, swim meets, track meets and graduations.

Visitation will be 1 p.m. until the time of service at 2:30 p.m. Sunday at Flanner & Buchanan-Oaklawn Memorial Gardens Good Shepherd Chapel, 9700 Allisonville Road, Indianapolis.
