Police: Martinsville man took knives, ammunition

A man was arrested after deputies said he stole ammunition, knives and alcohol from a Greenwood store Sunday afternoon and then fled from police.

Wayne Gebhart, 50, Martinsville, was arrested on charges of theft, resisting law enforcement forcibly, resisting law enforcement, failure to stop after an accident and operating a vehicle having forfeited a license for life.

Store security told deputies Gebhart stole about $400 worth of ammunition, knives and alcohol from Meijer, 150 Marlin Drive, at about 3:45 p.m. Sunday. Deputies found a vehicle matching the description from the theft nearby and tried to stop Gebhart on Sable Ridge Drive, near State Road 135, but he drove away, a Johnson County Sheriff’s Office report said.

Deputies followed Gebhart to Fry Road and then into a business complex on the north side of the road. Gebhart jumped out of his truck while it was still moving and ran. His truck hit and damaged one of the deputy’s vehicles, the report said.

Gebhart ran down a hill and into Pleasant Run Creek. Deputies called in a police dog, and found Gebhart after a witness spotted him running along Whispering Trail, the report said.

Deputies arrested Gebhart, who complained of a broken arm from a prior motorcycle accident. Gebhart was taken to Johnson Memorial Hospital for treatment and then was taken to the Johnson County jail, the report said. Gebhart, 1430 Harrison St., was held on $15,400 bond.
