Main Street semi ban approved

Drivers of semis will now need to avoid traveling through downtown Greenwood on Main Street.

Semis — with or without a trailer — will no longer be allowed to drive on Main Street between Emerson Avenue and U.S. 31, on Alexander Street between Airport Parkway and Country Aire Lane, and on Country Air Drive between Country Aire Lane and Emerson Avenue. The Greenwood City Council voted 9-0 to approve the ban earlier this week.

Drivers who do so will face a fine of up to $2,500; those making deliveries directly to business or homes will be exempt.

City officials also considered creating a mandatory city-wide truck route. That proposal was brought to a halt due to concerns from residents who worried about trucks being funneled onto streets near their homes.
