Police find man with gunshot wound in Franklin

Police searching for a man who had been shot found him outside a Franklin store, where he had gone for bandages after being turned away from a relative’s home in Greenwood where he first went for help, police reports said.

The man said he accidentally shot himself. Police learned during their investigation that he was wanted to face criminal charges in unrelated incidents.

Chad McPheeters, 38, of Brazil, Indiana, was arrested on charges of false informing, being a habitual traffic violator and his probation was revoked. He was held without bond at the Johnson County jail. He was first taken to Eskenazi Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment.

Police were called to a Greenwood home just before 8 p.m. Monday when a woman reported that a family member had come to the home asking for bandages. He had told his relative that he was cleaning his gun when it fired, striking him in the leg. She told him to leave and called police, reports said.

Greenwood officers began searching area stores to see if they could find McPheeters, suspecting he may have gone to a store to get bandages for his wound.

Franklin police found him in a local store parking lot with a gunshot wound to his leg, a police report said.
