Top swimmers keep moving forward

For those expected to be at the front of the pack at the boys swimming and diving sectional, the number one rule for the preliminaries is simple — don’t screw up.

Fortunately, none of the front-runners at the Franklin Sectional did so on Thursday evening.

The host Grizzly Cubs, the four-time defending champion, head into Saturday’s finals with the top seed in the bulk of the events, but it wasn’t a clean sweep.

Center Grove’s Noah Tallman and Indian Creek’s Tucker Brock finished 1-2 in the 100-yard butterfly, and another Brave, Nolan Reed, finished more than a full second ahead of the field in the 100 backstroke. Perry Meridian’s Noah Coomler established himself as a clear favorite this weekend in the 50 and 100 freestyle, posting the top time in both.

Still, Franklin fared well overall. The hosts put up the top time in each of the three relays despite not using their regular lineups, and their top individuals excelled as expected. Jacob Destrampe had the top times in the 200 and 500 freestyle, Griffin Edwards was first in the 200 individual medley and second in the backstroke, and Michael Couet led the way in the 100 breaststroke and trailed only Edwards in the 200 IM.

All event finals will take place Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. The diving preliminaries will be held earlier in the morning.

The top four divers in Saturday’s final will advance to next Tuesday’s regional at Bloomington North. Swimming event winners, as well as anyone hitting the state cut times, will move on to next weekend’s state meet at the IUPUI Natatorium.
